Pressure Mounts on Tinubu to Sack Defence Minister Badaru Over Escalating Insecurity.

The heat is on President Bola Tinubu as calls grow louder for the removal of Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, amid rising insecurity and fresh terrorist attacks across the country.

Over the weekend, the Afenifere Youth Vanguard for Peace in Nigeria (AYPN) threw their weight behind Hon. Yusuf Gagdi, a federal lawmaker from Plateau State, who had earlier issued a bold criticism of Badaru’s leadership in the House of Representatives.

“Defence Ministry Has Collapsed Under Badaru”

Gagdi had raised serious concerns following deadly attacks in Borno State, where terrorists reportedly overran military bases and seized over 40 tanks and platforms — a major blow to Nigeria’s defence efforts.

Echoing Gagdi’s alarm, AYPN President Olatunji Fadare declared:
“The Defence Ministry is not a reward for political loyalty. It’s the backbone of Nigeria’s safety — and it has collapsed under Badaru.”

The youth group described Gagdi’s comments as a “courageous vote of no confidence,” asserting that the minister has neither the competence nor the commitment to handle Nigeria’s worsening security situation.

“A Contractor in a Camouflage Ministry”

AYPN didn’t hold back. They accused Badaru of prioritizing personal business interests over national security and claimed that defence contracts are now being awarded based on political affiliations, not merit.

“Badaru is too old, too out-of-touch, and too distracted by ambition to lead a wartime ministry,” Fadare said. “We are fighting for our survival — and he’s not even present.”

They also alleged that key decisions in the ministry — from recruitment to procurement — are now heavily influenced by Badaru’s rumored 2027 presidential ambitions.

Ignoring Ground Warnings?

AYPN also criticized the Ministry’s dismissal of warnings from state governors and security stakeholders. Referring to Hon. Gagdi’s claim that reports from the Borno governor were ignored, the group said:

“When people on the ground raise alarm and the minister responds with propaganda, it shows the ministry has lost its moral compass.”

“Tinubu Must Act Now”

The group urged President Tinubu to overhaul the country’s defence structure immediately, starting with the removal of the defence minister.

“This is not about politics. It’s about survival. The President must show Nigerians that national interest comes before personal loyalty,” the statement concluded.

They warned that failure to take swift and decisive action could further erode public trust in the government’s ability to safeguard the lives and property of Nigerians.
