Following the service, the pontiff’s coffin was placed in an old popemobile and escorted through central Rome, passing iconic landmarks such as the Roman Forum and the Colosseum, before reaching the Basilica of Saint Mary Major.
Pope Francis, who died at the age of 88 on Easter Monday, had a profound devotion to the Virgin Mary and visited the basilica over 100 times during his papacy. His final wish to be buried at Santa Maria Maggiore rather than the traditional resting place in St. Peter’s Basilica was honored in an emotional farewell.
