Operatives of Operation Puff Adder of the Bayelsa State Police Command, in collaboration with the Nigerian Immigration Service, have rejected a bribe of ₦4 million from George Idumangi, the prime suspect in the murder of estate agent Richard Ekpebu.

Idumangi was arrested on Monday in Lagos by immigration officers while attempting to collect his processed international passport. His arrest followed intelligence sharing between the Immigration Service and the Nigerian Police Force, particularly Operation Puff Adder and the Area E Police Command, Lagos.

Reports reveal that Idumangi desperately offered ₦4 million to immigration officers to avoid being handed over to the police. Later, he allegedly offered ₦3 million to the police to delete sensitive files from his mobile phone.

A senior police officer in Yenagoa confirmed the failed bribe attempt, saying:

  • “He also offered two million naira to delete a file from his new mobile phone before he would be handed over, but they stood their ground and rejected the offer. In desperation, he increased it to three million for the phone to be destroyed, but the officers still refused.”

When Operation Puff Adder, led by CSP Chris Nwaogbo, arrived in Lagos to take custody of Idumangi, he repeated the bribe attempt, which was again turned down. His mobile phone and international passport are currently in police custody, and he is expected to be flown to Yenagoa soon.

Other suspects linked to the murder include Victor Shadrack (popularly known as Doggy), a man called Insurance, and Miss Victory Benard Henry, who allegedly received ₦1 million for her role in the killing.

Confirming the incident, Bayelsa State Police Command spokesman, SP Musa Mohammed, said:

  • “Yes, he offered them the bribe.”

Meanwhile, the Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) Worldwide, led by Sir Jonathan Lokpobiri, has condemned the involvement of its alleged members in the gruesome murder.

He also called on members of the public to cooperate with the police in ensuring all culprits are brought to book.
