Police Fire Tear Gas at Abuja Protesters Demanding Cybercrime Act Review, Economic Relief.

Security operatives of the Nigeria Police Force on Monday, April 7, 2025, used tear gas to disperse peaceful protesters in the Maitama area of Abuja, triggering chaos and panic among demonstrators.

The protest, organized by the Take-It-Back Movement in collaboration with other civil society organisations, aimed to highlight multiple national concerns, including the alleged abuse of the Cybercrime Act, Nigeria’s growing economic hardship, and the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State.

Protesters carried placards with messages such as “Stop the Repression” and “Let Us Breathe,” marching through the streets of the Federal Capital Territory to draw public and government attention.

Eyewitnesses reported that as the crowd grew, police operatives fired multiple tear gas canisters into the air, forcing the protesters to disperse in different directions for safety. Despite the disruption, there were no immediate reports of injuries or arrests at the scene.

Omoyele Sowore, human rights activist and former presidential candidate, joined the protest to show solidarity. He and other demonstrators emphasized the need for urgent government reforms to address inflation, insecurity, and civil liberties.

Juwon Sanyaolu, the National Coordinator of the Take-It-Back Movement, previously stated in a press release that the protest was a response to what he called the “increasing authoritarianism” of the current administration. He further called for economic relief measures to support suffering Nigerians.

The protest adds to a growing wave of public discontent, as citizens continue to call on the federal government to address pressing socio-economic and human rights issues.
