The Abia State Police Command has arrested a couple, Sunday Emebo (42) and Blessing Emebo (49), for allegedly running an illegal orphanage and engaging in child trafficking operations in Aba.
According to a statement by the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Maureen Chinaka, the couple was apprehended on May 19, 2025, around 11:45 a.m., after credible intelligence led detectives to their apartment located along Ikot Ekpene Road.
12 Children Rescued from Unregistered Orphanage
During the raid, police discovered twelve children, aged between two months and 14 years, reportedly taken from different villages in Arochukwu. The rescued victims include:
- Ojiugo Caleb (14 yrs)
- Christian Okoro (12 yrs)
- Samuel Okoro (13 yrs)
- Clinton Nkemakolam (9 yrs)
- Godwin Emmanuel (10 yrs)
- Osinachi Nkemakolam (6 yrs)
- Marvelous Emmanuel (5 yrs)
- David Emmanuel (7 yrs)
- Testimony Emebo (2 months)
- Ogechi Nkemakolam (9 yrs)
- Chinaza Okoro (9 yrs)
- Anointing Okoro (7 yrs)

The children have been handed over to the Abia State Ministry of Women’s Affairs for proper care and protection.
Police Vow to Prosecute, Urge Vigilance
The suspects are currently undergoing interrogation at the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Umuahia and will be charged in court after investigations are concluded.
ASP Chinaka emphasized the command’s commitment to tackling crime and protecting vulnerable individuals in the state. She urged the public to remain vigilant and avoid entrusting children to unfamiliar individuals.
