Peter Obi Lists Five Things He Would Have Done Differently as President.

Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, has once again criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration, arguing that the government has failed to fulfill its promises to Nigerians.

Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, Obi assessed Tinubu’s two-year performance, stating that his government has not made a visible impact in key sectors.

The former Anambra State governor emphasized that, if he were president, Nigeria would have seen considerable progress in five critical areas.

Five Key Changes Obi Would Have Made as President

1. Tackling Corruption & Reducing the Cost of Governance

Obi stated that his government would have aggressively tackled corruption while reducing the cost of governance in a way that Nigerians would clearly see and feel.

“The President has been in office for two years, and we can all see where we are. That means you can change things in two years. If I was there, you would have seen a considerable change in critical areas. I would have tackled corruption head-on and reduced the cost of governance. People would feel it,” Obi said.

2. Proper Investment of Borrowed Funds in Healthcare

Obi criticized the Tinubu administration’s spending priorities, stating that 70% of Nigeria’s primary healthcare system is non-functional despite significant government borrowing.

“Our primary healthcare system today is 70% non-functional. Yet, we spent over N35 billion on a conference center. What conference? Who is coming for the conference? We need to invest our money properly. Borrowed money should go into critical sectors like healthcare,” he argued.

3. Transforming Nigeria into a Leading Rice Producer

Using Bangladesh as an example, Obi stated that his government would have harnessed Nigeria’s vast land resources to make the country a major rice-producing nation.

“Bangladesh, a country with just 148,000 km² of land, produces 60 million metric tons of rice. Nigeria, with over six times that land size, cannot even produce 10% of that. This shows a lack of proper planning,” Obi lamented.

4. Supporting Naira Devaluation with Productivity

While Obi agreed with Tinubu’s decision to devalue the naira, he criticized the way the policy was executed, saying it should have been done in an organized manner.

“There’s nothing wrong with devaluation, but I would have allowed the naira to float in an organized manner. The whole idea behind floating a currency is to boost productivity. If you devalue without increasing production, it becomes a double whammy,” he explained.

5. Boosting Exports to Strengthen the Economy

According to Obi, floating the naira should have been accompanied by policies to increase exports and attract foreign investments.

“When you float a currency, you need to increase local production so that investors can come in and people can buy what you produce. Otherwise, it worsens the economic crisis,” he added.

Obi’s Vision for a Productive Nigeria

Obi’s remarks reinforce his belief that Nigeria needs urgent economic and structural reforms to address issues like corruption, poor investment choices, low agricultural productivity, and a weak currency.

With Nigeria’s economy facing rising inflation, forex instability, and slow industrial growth, Obi insists that the right policies could turn things around within two years.
