Garba Datti Muhammad, the National Vice Chairman (North West) of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has called on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai to abandon their alleged ambitions for the 2027 presidential election.
Datti, a long-serving lawmaker from Kaduna State, made this known in an open letter addressed to Atiku, urging him to end his repeated bids for the presidency and embrace the role of an elder statesman.
“You’ve been contesting for the presidency since 1993. As we approach 2027, it’s time to bow out gracefully,” Datti stated. He noted that Atiku’s possible plans to form a coalition against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should be dropped, especially as the former vice president will be turning 80 by then.

He advised Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 PDP presidential candidate, to take a cue from former Vice President Namadi Sambo, who has remained behind the scenes as a respected elder statesman since leaving office in 2015.
Datti also warned Atiku against entertaining political alliances with figures like Nasir El-Rufai, whom he accused of trying to lure Atiku into a coalition against the APC.

Addressing El-Rufai, Datti reminded him of his key role as one of the founding members of the APC, and advised him to reconcile with the party rather than attempting to form opposition forces.
“It is troubling that after serving the APC for eight years as governor, El-Rufai is now distancing himself at such a critical time,” he said.
Datti’s remarks come amid rising political speculations ahead of the 2027 general elections, with possible realignments and coalitions being discussed behind closed doors.
