PDP NWC Holds Emergency Meeting in Abuja as Defections Hit Hard.

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has convened an emergency meeting at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, following a series of high-profile defections that have rocked the opposition party.

The meeting, which is currently ongoing behind closed doors, comes amid escalating internal crises and a growing wave of defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

NaijaBlogDaily reports that the PDP suffered a major blow last week when its 2023 vice-presidential candidate, Ifeanyi Okowa, along with Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, officially defected to the APC. The move has significantly weakened the PDP’s influence in Delta State, once considered a stronghold.

According to insider reports, the defection included a full collapse of the PDP’s political structure in the state. Delta State Deputy Governor Monday Onyeme, several state commissioners, local government chairmen, and a large number of grassroots political leaders are said to have moved en masse to the APC after a strategic closed-door meeting in Asaba.

Party sources say the NWC is deliberating on the implications of these defections and possible steps to prevent further erosion of the PDP’s base ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party leadership is expected to release an official statement following the emergency meeting.
