The Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN) has sealed 471 pharmaceutical premises in Edo State during a week-long enforcement exercise aimed at sanitising drug distribution and safeguarding public health.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday at the PCN State Office, Federal Secretariat, Benin City, the Head of Enforcement, Dr Suleiman Chiroma, revealed that the operation targeted illegal and substandard pharmaceutical outlets operating without proper authorization.

According to him, a total of 743 premises—comprising 196 pharmacies and 547 patent medicine stores—were inspected across Oredo, Ikpoba-Okha, Ovia North-East, Egor, and Uhunmwonde Local Government Areas.
- “Out of these, 471 premises were sealed, including 77 pharmacies, 174 patent medicine stores, and 220 unlicensed shops. Four additional premises received compliance directives to correct specific infractions. One individual was arrested for obstructing PCN inspectors,” Dr Chiroma stated.
Why the Crackdown?
Chiroma explained that Nigeria’s chaotic drug distribution system and the rise of unlicensed medicine outlets continue to endanger public health, with untrained individuals selling substandard or falsified medicines in unsafe environments.
- He stressed that the enforcement exercise was designed to:
- Ensure compliance with professional pharmacy standards.
- Assess the competence of pharmaceutical personnel.

PCN’s Safety Advice to the Public
The PCN urged residents of Edo State and Nigerians at large to buy medicines only from licensed pharmacies and accredited Patent and Proprietary Medicine Vendors (PPMVs). Licensed outlets, the Council emphasized, are required to display valid certificates clearly within their premises.
World Pharmacists Day
As part of the event, the Council also marked World Pharmacists Day, themed “Think Health – Think Pharmacist.” The PCN extended greetings to pharmacists globally and reaffirmed its commitment to promoting safe, ethical, and professional pharmacy practice across Nigeria.
