Former First Lady of Nigeria, Dame Patience Jonathan, has added a new academic feather to her cap as she received a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Psychology, Guidance and Counselling from Ignatius Ajuru University of Education.
The former First Lady used the occasion to encourage Nigerians, especially women and youths, to embrace lifelong learning, stating that education is a continuous journey, regardless of age.
The announcement was made in a statement released by her media adviser, Chris Okeke, on Sunday, following the 43rd Postgraduate Convocation Ceremony of the university, which took place on Saturday.
“No Age Is Too Late to Learn” — Patience Jonathan
In her convocation address, Jonathan highlighted the transformative power of education, stressing that age should never be a barrier to pursuing academic excellence.
“I feel that no age is too late to achieve your academic dreams, whether you are young or old.
If I can do it, you can also do it,” she said.
She emphasized that even in retirement, one can return to school to refresh the mind, acquire new knowledge, and develop personally.
“Education provides the opportunity to always refresh your brain and learn new things,” she added.
A Message to Women and Youths
Dame Jonathan dedicated her PhD to Nigerian women, urging them, along with the youth, to aspire to reach their full potential through quality education.
“Let me use this opportunity to encourage Nigerian women and the youth to aspire to become the best of themselves through qualitative education,” she stated.
She also reaffirmed her commitment to advocating for the rights and welfare of women, children, and vulnerable groups, pledging to continue using her platform to drive meaningful dialogue and social development.
Gratitude to God and Family
Reflecting on her academic journey, she expressed deep gratitude to God and her family for their unwavering support.
“First of all, I am very grateful to the Almighty God who has made today a reality.
He saw me through the programme, so I am very happy today.”
She gave special appreciation to her husband, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, former President of Nigeria, for his constant support and valuable advice.
