The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has strongly denied allegations that its Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, held a clandestine meeting with a former and serving governor from the South-South region before their alleged defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
EFCC Reacts to Allegations by Atiku’s Spokesman
The rebuttal follows claims made by Paul Ibe, spokesperson to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, during an appearance on Politics Today hosted by Seun Okinbaloye on Channels Television.
Ibe alleged that Olukoyede and the Solicitor General of the Federation met with the unnamed political figures just 48 hours before their defection, purportedly at a government lodge in the South-South.
Unconfirmed reports had linked Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, and his predecessor, Ifeanyi Okowa, to a possible move from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC in April.
EFCC Labels Claims as False and Malicious
In a statement released Friday, the EFCC expressed outrage over the accusations, labeling them as “patently fabricated” and “in bad taste.”
“The EFCC is outraged by the unfounded claims of Mr. Paul Ibe… alleging that Ola Olukoyede, Executive Chairman, held a secret meeting with an unnamed politician,” the Commission stated.
The agency emphasized that Olukoyede has consistently maintained a non-partisan stance since his appointment, insisting that the EFCC remains firmly apolitical.

“Mr. Olukoyede has stressed it at several fora that he is apolitical and the EFCC is totally wired against partisan tendencies.”
Public Urged to Disregard ‘Baseless Allegations’
The EFCC urged the public to disregard the allegation, claiming it exists only in “Paul Ibe’s imagination.”
The controversy adds to ongoing tensions within Nigeria’s political scene, especially amid speculations surrounding high-profile defections and the integrity of anti-corruption institutions.
