The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has clarified that the ongoing National Library project is not politically motivated. She made this statement during a press lunch at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, while announcing that her 65th birthday fundraiser, tagged Oluremi@65 Education Fund, has so far realised ₦20.7 billion towards the completion of the library.

She explained that the account will remain open until December 2025 to allow more donations from Nigerians and well-wishers who believe in the project’s importance.

  • “We all have to rise up and play our parts in the building process. A grain of sand and a drop of water makes a mighty ocean,” the First Lady said, quoting Lebanese writer Gebran Khalil Gebran to drive home her point.

Oluremi Tinubu, who described herself as a teacher and book lover, noted that libraries played a crucial role in shaping her early life. She added that her call for support is driven by passion and service, not politics.

  • “What is wrong in doing well or trying to build our country? This is not the first time I have raised funds for causes close to my heart,” she said.

She recalled that on her 45th birthday, she raised ₦50 million for the National Sickle Cell Foundation Center, and on her 50th birthday, she raised ₦200 million for the New Era Foundation and other charities.

Highlighting the National Library’s stalled history, she said the project was first initiated in 1981 with an initial cost of ₦8.2 billion, but funding challenges dragged the project out for decades. By 2023, the cost had risen to ₦23 billion. She assured Nigerians that with the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, the project will be completed within two years.

The First Lady further disclosed that the signatories to the account are the Minister of Education and the Chief Librarian of the Federation, emphasizing that her role is simply to champion the fundraising drive.

She acknowledged the wide range of contributors, including President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima and his wife, former President Muhammadu Buhari, several former First Ladies, the Senate President and his wife, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and his wife, members of the National Assembly, governors and their spouses, security chiefs, and top business moguls such as Aliko Dangote, Abdulsamad Rabiu, Arthur Eze, Tony Elumelu, and Jim Ovia, among others.

“This is not just a project but a national treasure that will serve generations to come,” she concluded.
