Okpebholo Approves ₦1 Billion Annual Bursary Scheme for Edo Students in Tertiary Institutions.

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has approved a landmark ₦1 billion annual bursary programme for students of Edo origin enrolled in tertiary institutions across Nigeria.

The announcement was made in a statement on Sunday by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr Fred Itua, following a town hall meeting with Edo youth leaders in Benin City.

Alleviating the Burden on Edo Families

Governor Okpebholo said the bursary initiative is aimed at easing the financial pressure on students and their families, especially in the face of the rising cost of education in Nigeria.

“This bursary scheme is a direct response to the concerns of our young people. It is designed to empower students and ensure that no genuine Edo indigene is left behind due to financial constraints,” the governor stated.

Strict Eligibility Verification Process

To ensure transparency and fairness, the bursary will only be open to authentic Edo indigenes, whose eligibility will be verified through their local government areas of origin.

The scheme will be disbursed annually, and further details on how to apply — including procedures and deadlines — will be released soon by the relevant state agencies.

Investing in Education and Youth Empowerment

Governor Okpebholo emphasized that the bursary initiative aligns with his administration’s broader vision to promote academic excellence, educational access, and youth development across Edo State.

“We are committed to creating opportunities for our youths. Education is the foundation for growth, and this administration will continue to invest in the future of our young people,” he said.

The ₦1 billion bursary fund is expected to directly benefit thousands of undergraduates, polytechnic students, and other tertiary-level learners nationwide.
