IJEBU ODE, OGUN STATE
The historic town of Ijebu Ode came alive this weekend as the 2025 Ojude Oba Festival kicked off in grand style, dazzling attendees with vibrant colours, regal traditions, and unforgettable cultural displays.
The annual event, one of Nigeria’s most prestigious cultural festivals, draws visitors from across the country and beyond, as the Ijebu people gather to pay homage to their royal father, the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona.
Rooted in history since the 19th century, the Ojude Oba began as a thanksgiving celebration by the Muslim community in Ijebu, in appreciation of the monarch for allowing religious freedom. Over the decades, it has grown into a multi-faith, multi-cultural spectacle that symbolizes unity, peace, and heritage.
Regberegbe Groups Take Centre Stage
At the heart of the festival are the colourful and competitive displays by regberegbe – traditional age-grade groups – each clad in elaborate aso-oke, lace, and agbada designs. Their grand entrance parades, synchronized dances, and choreographed salutes to the Awujale captivated spectators.
Royal Horsemen and Yoruba Pride
Adding more excitement to the festivities were the royal horsemen, some of whom are descendants of noble families. Dressed in richly embroidered robes, they showcased their skill in horseback riding and paid their respects to the monarch in a show of elegance and bravery.

The celebration also featured traditional drummers, talking drum performances, Yoruba chants, and cultural dancers, all celebrating the depth and beauty of Yoruba traditions.
Ojude Oba: A Symbol of Unity and Heritage
The festival isn’t just a cultural carnival—it’s a powerful symbol of unity. Families, dignitaries, business moguls, and government officials gather not just to enjoy the show but to reconnect with their roots and affirm their identity as proud Ijebu people.
For many, Ojude Oba is a time to reflect on their lineage, showcase elegance, and honour their heritage in the presence of the revered Awujale, who remains one of the most respected traditional rulers in Nigeria.
