In a major boost for inclusive education, the Ogun State Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology has trained over 150 special needs teachers across the state on modern teaching methods tailored for learners with disabilities.
The training, organized by the Department of Special Needs Education, took place in Abeokuta and was themed:
“Understanding the Implementation of Inclusive Education Strategies for Supporting Diverse Learners and the Role of Assistive Technology Integration in Special Needs.”
Government’s Commitment to Inclusive Education
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Commissioner Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu described the workshop as a clear demonstration of Governor Dapo Abiodun’s commitment to improving the lives of people living with disabilities in Ogun State.
“This government has increased the complimentary meals of our special needs learners by over 120%, provided wheelchairs and white canes for mobility, and even resuscitated the Braille Book Production Centre,” Arigbabu noted.
He further emphasized that the state’s five special needs schools have not been left behind in infrastructural development, receiving new furniture, modern toilet facilities, and building renovations.
Empathy at the Heart of Teaching
Arigbabu charged the participating teachers to approach their work with empathy and a deep sense of purpose:
“I’m charging our teachers in the special schools to be empathetic, highly supportive, and help learners realise that they can become highly respected citizens of this great nation.”
Equipping Teachers for the Future
Permanent Secretary Mrs. Oluwatosin Oloko stressed that the workshop’s goal was to equip teachers with 21st-century teaching methodologies that address the unique challenges of children with special needs.
Mrs. Deborah Ogundimu, Director of Special Needs Education, highlighted that the programme would help teachers better understand inclusive education principles, improve strategies to support diverse learning needs, and integrate assistive technology into their teaching.
