Oborevwori Absent as APC Governors Welcome New Defectors to Party.

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), was noticeably absent as APC governors met in Abuja on Saturday night to welcome new entrants into the party.

NaijaBlogDaily reports that the meeting, held at the Imo Governor’s Lodge in Abuja, was organized by the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) to celebrate the growing list of political heavyweights defecting to the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Although Oborevwori officially announced his defection earlier this week, citing the need for better political alignment for Delta State, he was missing from the crucial gathering. His absence raised questions among political observers, especially considering the symbolic nature of the event.

Other notable attendees included Senator Ned Nwoko (Delta North), Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo, former Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege, APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka, former governorship candidate Great Ogboru, and several members of the National Assembly.

Oborevwori’s defection, along with that of his predecessor, Ifeanyi Okowa, who was the PDP’s Vice Presidential candidate in 2023, marks a significant shift in Delta State politics. Both leaders, along with many PDP structures in the South-South region, have pledged their loyalty to the APC, calling it a “better platform for the oil-rich state.”

The latest round of defections has intensified concerns over the weakening of the PDP, with some analysts describing it as a major blow to the opposition’s chances of regaining power in 2027.

However, PDP stalwarts like Chief Bode George, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar remain confident in the party’s resilience. They insist the PDP will bounce back stronger.

Speaking recently on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Bode George said, “There is anger in the land. What do they want to achieve in APC except personal gain? Delta people know what they enjoyed under PDP leadership. If you leave for personal reasons, we wish you luck, but many who left before came back.”

He added that the APC, despite defections, still faces major credibility issues with Nigerians ahead of the next general elections.
