Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has taken a swipe at President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accusing him of using manipulated statistics to hide Nigeria’s deepening economic crisis.

In a statement posted on his official X account (formerly Twitter) on Monday, Obi reminded Nigerians of Tinubu’s past criticism of data-driven governance during the election campaign.

“In November 2022, while campaigning in Delta State, Tinubu said he was ashamed to call my name and mocked me, saying, ‘Na statistics we go chop?’ All I want is to put food on the table of Nigerians,” Obi recalled.

He lamented that nearly two years into Tinubu’s administration, the situation has worsened, with Nigeria now ranked among the world’s hungriest nations.

  • “Millions of citizens are unsure where their next meal will come from,” he said.

Obi further accused Tinubu of flooding the media with what he described as “false data” to mislead the public about the country’s real condition.

“From unemployment figures to inflation rates and GDP rebasing, the presidency is pushing numbers that do not reflect the harsh realities Nigerians are facing,” he stated.

He concluded by stressing that leadership must be built on honesty and vision:

“Governance is not rocket science. It is not a gamble. It requires sincerity of purpose, character, competence, capacity, and compassion,” Obi asserted.
