The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is expected to spend a staggering N307.6 billion on the mobilization and payment of allowances to corps members following the recent increase in their stipends from N33,000 to N77,000.
This increment, announced in September 2024, was a result of the new minimum wage bill signed into law in May 2024. On average, the NYSC mobilizes about 333,000 corps members annually in three batches—A, B, and C. With each corps member now entitled to N77,000 monthly, the total payment per batch is projected at N25.64 billion, accumulating to N307.6 billion per year.
Delays in Payment Implementation
Despite the budgetary allocation of N430.7 billion to the NYSC in the 2025 Federal Budget, with N372.9 billion (86.5%) set aside for corps members’ allowances, the new N77,000 payment has yet to be implemented.

NYSC officials, including acting Director of Press and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, have stated that the scheme is still awaiting cash backing for the increased allowance. Meanwhile, the newly appointed Director-General, Brig. Gen. Olakunle Nafiu has assured that payments will commence in March 2025.
