The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has successfully evacuated its members from crisis-hit areas in Benue State to safer locations following a rise in insecurity, particularly in Yelwata and Daudu communities.
The move comes amid growing tensions and violent confrontations that have led to unrest and fears over the safety of serving corps members.
NYSC Relocates Corps Members in Coordination with Police
Speaking on the development, NYSC Benue State Coordinator, Mrs. Veronica Garba, confirmed that the evacuation was carried out in close collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force. The affected corps members were relocated to secure homes and NYSC association offices in the state capital, Makurdi.
“We understand the anxiety in times like this, but we want to reassure parents that their children are in safe hands,” she said.
All Corps Members Safe and Accounted For
Mrs. Garba emphasized that no corps member was harmed, and all those relocated are currently receiving proper care.
- “We appreciate the worry during such times, but we want to assure parents and guardians that their children are well cared for.”
- She also appealed to the public for continued prayers and spiritual support, saying it makes a significant difference during critical periods.
Security Efforts Boosted by New Leadership
The State Coordinator praised the quick response by security agencies, attributing the efficiency to the recent appointment of new security chiefs in Benue State.
She expressed hope that the ongoing efforts would help restore peace and stability to crisis-affected communities.
Evacuation Follows Presidential Security Directive
The evacuation comes shortly after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu visited Makurdi, where he directed security forces to restore law and order in troubled areas and ensure that those responsible for the violence are brought to justice.
