The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran Nollywood actress, Nkechi Nweje, who passed away after a brief illness.

Her death was confirmed on Saturday by filmmaker Stanley Ajemba (Stanley Ontop), who shared a heartfelt tribute via his Instagram handle.

Tributes Pour In for Nkechi Nweje

Stanley Ontop described Nweje as a vibrant actress and his best friend, recalling their last conversation during the Queen’s saga, where she advised him to step back.

He wrote:

“Nollywood in tears as we lost one of our vibrant actresses, @nkechi.nweje, after a brief illness. Couldn’t post since morning because it felt like a dream. Ezigbo Nwanyi Onitsha. Rest in peace, ma’am.”

Veteran actress Rita Edochie also paid tribute, sharing a candlelight post with the caption:

“This world is really not our home.”

Similarly, actor Asa Ikuku expressed his grief, writing:

“Rest in peace, Mummy Nkechi Nweje TV (Nwanyi Onitsha). You were a blessing to us, but God knows best. We will miss you so much. Rest on, legend.”

A Lasting Legacy in Nollywood

Nkechi Nweje was widely recognized for her compelling motherly roles in Nollywood, earning her a deep connection with fans and colleagues.

She is survived by her husband, Dr. Azuibuike Nweje, and six children.
