The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has clarified that no ransom was paid to secure the release of Retired Brigadier General Mahrazu Tsiga, a former Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), who was abducted and held captive for 56 days.
In a statement issued by DHQ Spokesman, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the military emphasized that troops employed both kinetic and non-kinetic operations to track and rescue the former NYSC boss from kidnappers believed to be operating in parts of Katsina State.
“Since Brigadier General Tsiga’s abduction on February 7, 2025, troops have remained relentless in their pursuit, carrying out sustained air and ground operations across Danmusa, Kankara, and Faskari Local Government Areas, where he was believed to have been held,” the statement noted.
The Defence Headquarters commended the gallant efforts of the soldiers, highlighting their sacrifice and bravery, often under life-threatening conditions.

General Gusau described reports suggesting that ransom was paid as false and misleading, calling it a deliberate attempt to undermine the military’s ongoing efforts to combat insurgency, banditry, and kidnapping in the North-West region.
“The rescue of General Tsiga is a testament to the effectiveness of the coordinated military strategies. His life is invaluable, and the successful search-and-rescue operation reflects our commitment to protecting all Nigerians,” the statement concluded.
The DHQ urged the public to disregard online misinformation and continue supporting the armed forces in their mission to restore peace and security across the country.
