Former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi has strongly criticized the current state of Nigeria’s democracy under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, Obi declared that Nigeria is no longer operating under democratic principles, citing recent political events in Edo and Rivers States as evidence.
“There is no democracy in Nigeria today,” Obi said firmly.
Tinubu’s Actions in Rivers State Under Fire
Peter Obi referenced President Tinubu’s controversial declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, following political unrest between Governor Sim Fubara and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
The President had suspended the Governor, his Deputy, and the entire state House of Assembly for six months. In their place, he appointed a Sole Administrator, a move Obi slammed as undemocratic and unconstitutional.
“You cannot solve any problem in a democratic setting by going against the rules,” Obi warned.
Edo Election Also Questioned
Obi also questioned the credibility of the recently concluded Edo State governorship election, implying that it lacked transparency and did not reflect democratic ideals.

“The election in Edo – does it show any sign that Nigeria is a democratic country? No.
The coffin was nailed by what happened in Rivers State,” he added.
Hints at 2027 Presidential Run
- When asked about his intentions for the 2027 presidential election, Obi hinted at the possibility of running again, saying he remains committed to building a better Nigeria.
“I am committed to a better Nigeria and I have what it takes… I have the experience.
Of all those who want to be President today, nobody has my background.
I’ve operated in the corporate world, and I’ve been a governor,” he emphasized.
Peter Obi’s comments have sparked renewed conversations about electoral integrity, governance, and the future of democracy in Nigeria, as many Nigerians look ahead to 2027 with growing anticipation.
