Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial to Restart on March 21, New Judge Named.

The trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), will commence afresh on March 21, 2025, under a new judge, Justice James Omotosho, at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Kanu’s lead counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, confirmed the development, stating that the legal team is fully prepared. However, he noted that they have not yet been served the charges Kanu will face in court.

Key Developments in Kanu’s Legal Battle

  • In September 2024, Kanu demanded Justice Binta Nyako recuse herself from the case, citing impartiality concerns.
  • Although Justice Nyako initially stepped down, the Chief Judge of the Abuja Federal High Court rejected her withdrawal.

By December 2024, Justice Nyako indefinitely adjourned the case, prompting Kanu to refuse to appear in court until a new, impartial judge was assigned.

With Justice Omotosho taking over, the case will begin as if it never happened before, effectively resetting all legal proceedings since 2015.

Uncertainty Over Charges

Ejimakor revealed that the government has not disclosed the specific charges against Kanu, a tactic that could limit the defense’s preparation time.

“The case will start anew like it never happened before. Everything from his 2015 arrest to his last appearance before Justice Nyako is gone, including all pending appeals,” Ejimakor stated.

Kanu’s legal team expects the charges to be served at the last minute, possibly a day before or even during the hearing, making it difficult to prepare adequately.

As the March 21 trial date approaches, all eyes will be on Abuja to see how this fresh legal battle unfolds.
