The Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy and Development (FENRAD) has raised fresh concerns over the deteriorating health of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), urging South-East governors and federal lawmakers from the region to take urgent action.
In a statement issued on Thursday by its Executive Director, Comrade Nelson Nnanna Nwafor, FENRAD appealed to South-East political leaders to immediately reach out to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and demand Kanu’s release on humanitarian and health grounds.
The group warned that delaying action could come at “enormous cost,” stressing that reports from the Department of State Services (DSS) indicate Kanu’s health has significantly worsened, sparking fears of a potential medical emergency.
- “His right to life and health must be respected. The Nigerian state owes it a duty—both morally and constitutionally—to ensure that Mazi Kanu is not allowed to die in custody. This is not just about politics; this is about human rights,” the group said.
FENRAD also criticized the federal government’s refusal to comply with previous court rulings that granted Kanu bail, describing his continued detention as a violation of his constitutional rights.

The organization emphasized that President Tinubu has a “golden opportunity” to demonstrate statesmanship by directing the Attorney General and relevant authorities to review Kanu’s case and facilitate his release.
- “Releasing Kanu under strict legal conditions would not only de-escalate tensions in the South-East but also pave the way for dialogue, peace-building, and national healing,” FENRAD stated.
The civil rights group further urged South-East lawmakers not to remain silent, warning that failure to act could be perceived as complicity in systemic injustice.
This appeal comes just ahead of Friday’s ruling on Kanu’s no-case submission in the ongoing terrorism trial filed against him by the Nigerian government.
