Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has raised fresh concerns over his deteriorating health while in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), warning that he is at risk of sudden death if urgent medical care is not provided.

In a detailed letter addressed to the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Kanu revealed that he is battling multiple health complications, including liver, pancreas, kidney, bladder, prostate, and white matter disease, as well as sleep apnea. He described tinnitus — a constant internal “chirping” in his ears — and sleep deprivation as the gravest threats to his survival, saying they worsen his hypertension and place him at risk of stroke, collapse, and sudden death.

According to Kanu, DSS doctors once suggested draining fluid from his inner ear but abandoned the procedure due to the risk of permanent hearing loss. He also accused the DSS medical team, particularly Dr. Nasiru Mohammed, of falsifying his medical records to downplay the severity of his condition.

• “Over 50 blood samples have been taken during my time in DSS custody, yet my health has not improved. Instead, I suffer frequent nosebleeds, fainting episodes, severe chest pains, debilitating headaches, and swelling of the feet,” Kanu wrote.

He further alleged that his longtime physician, Dr. Cfine, was barred from access and intimidated until the intervention of Emeritus Professor Martin Aghaji, a renowned surgeon, whose medical care briefly stabilized his potassium levels and reduced some symptoms.

Kanu, however, maintained that despite these interventions, his tinnitus and sleep-related complications persist, making his life “unbearable.” He accused the DSS of showing “reckless disregard” for his life by failing to provide proper treatment and intimidating independent doctors.
