Abuja, Nigeria –
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has threatened a total shutdown of activities in Abuja following the lingering strike by area council workers.
Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the FCT NLC Chairman, Dr. Stephen Knabayi, said the union plans to mobilize members for mass action once President Bola Ahmed Tinubu concludes the ongoing series of project inaugurations scheduled to end on July 3, 2025.

The proposed action is aimed at drawing the attention of the FCT Administration, particularly FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, to the prolonged strike that has crippled essential services.
- “Members of the union will take over the streets of Abuja as soon as Tinubu concludes the inaugurations, hopefully on July 3. We are waiting for it to end, and we will come together to step up our planned action,” Knabayi stated.

Strike Cripples Health, Education in FCT
NaijaBlogDaily reports that all primary healthcare centres across the territory have remained shut due to the strike. Likewise, primary school teachers have stayed off duty for months, leaving pupils at home and disrupting academic activities.
- The situation escalated further on Tuesday, when primary school pupils staged a protest at the residence of the FCT Minister, demanding urgent government intervention to end the strike.
The NLC insists that the planned shutdown is necessary to compel the FCT administration to engage in meaningful dialogue and resolve the outstanding issues affecting workers’ welfare.
