Nigeria’s electricity generation has witnessed a steady decline, recording a drop of 531 megawatts in just three days, according to the latest National Grid performance report.
From Thursday, April 17 to Saturday, April 19, 2025, the country’s peak power generation fell from 5,273.80MW to 4,742.80MW, a worrying sign for a nation already struggling with chronic power shortages.
Breakdown of Daily Peak Generation:
- Thursday, April 17: 5,273.80 MW
- Friday, April 18: 5,131.20 MW
- Saturday, April 19: 4,742.80 MW
This comes shortly after Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, announced that Nigeria reached its highest-ever energy peak of 5,801.63 megawatts, raising questions about the sustainability of that milestone.
Speaking again on Thursday, Adelabu assured Nigerians that the Federal Government is taking active steps to stabilize the power sector and prevent system collapse. He also revealed that part of the government’s strategy includes plans to partly offset the N4 trillion debt owed to Electricity Generation Companies (GenCos).
Despite massive investments and various reform efforts, Nigeria’s power sector remains plagued by poor infrastructure, gas supply issues, and insufficient capacity to meet the demands of over 200 million citizens.
