Chief Olabode George, former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has expressed optimism that Nigeria will not descend into a one-party state despite the ongoing wave of defections hitting the main opposition party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In an interview, Bode George emphasized that the PDP remains strong and that the party’s upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting will determine its future direction.

Addressing concerns over recent defections—including that of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to the All Progressives Congress (APC)—George questioned what defectors are truly seeking in a ruling party that, according to him, has no viable structure or meaningful achievements.
He said, “What has the President done to improve the economic situation in Nigeria? What about insecurity, kidnapping, and killings? How has he addressed these issues? Defectors are leaving a well-structured party for a place that lacks organization.”
George dismissed fears of Nigeria becoming a one-party state, stressing, “Nigerians are too clever for that. Nigeria is a multi-tribal, multi-racial nation; it can never function as a one-party system. We are not under military rule, and the Constitution does not allow perpetual dominance by any tribe or party.”
He further criticized the motives behind the mass defections, linking them to internal party influences and personal political ambitions, particularly mentioning Governor Oborevwori’s connection to former governor Ifeanyi Okowa.

On the growing North/South divide due to the 2027 presidential ambition of President Bola Tinubu, George insisted that Nigeria’s unity transcends regional politics. He said, “Nigeria is not about North or South; it is one indivisible nation where every human being matters.”
As a founding father of the PDP, George reiterated his commitment to fighting for the soul of the party, stating that the outcome of the NEC meeting will reveal whether true democrats will save or abandon the PDP.
He concluded, “Nothing lasts forever. As elders, we must stand for the truth without fear.”
