The Nigerian Senate has announced plans to hold a special tribute session on Wednesday in honour of late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on July 13, 2025.
According to reports, the session will reflect on Buhari’s enduring legacies, leadership style, and his contributions to Nigeria’s national development. This follows a similar tribute held by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) last week.
During the FEC session, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu paid glowing tributes to his predecessor, stating that Buhari “led the country with restraint, governed with dignity, and bore the burdens of leadership without complaint.”
Buhari’s Life and Legacy
The former president died in London after a prolonged but undisclosed illness at the age of 82. His body was laid to rest last week in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, in a high-profile burial attended by dignitaries from Nigeria and beyond.
Buhari was Nigeria’s second-longest-serving leader. He first led the nation as a military head of state from 1983 to 1985 before returning as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023. His tenure was marked by efforts to fight corruption, improve infrastructure, and stabilize the economy, though it was also marred by insecurity and economic challenges.
