Nigerian Man Jailed in UK After Forcing Kisses on Patient at York Hospital.

A Nigerian healthcare worker, Adewale Kudabo, has been sentenced to one year in prison in the United Kingdom for sexually assaulting a female patient while on duty at York Hospital.

The 47-year-old was found guilty of two counts of sexual assault after forcibly kissing a vulnerable patient twice during her hospital stay. The incidents occurred during routine care, shortly after Kudabo had been assigned to bathe the patient.

Prosecutor Henry Fernnandez, during the trial, revealed that the victim was in considerable pain and distress at the time. Despite her limited mobility, she attempted to resist Kudabo’s unwanted advances.

“After bathing the patient, Kudabo leaned down and kissed her on the lips. Days later, he tried again during another interaction, forcing a second kiss,” Fernnandez told the court, as reported by YorkPress.

The victim, traumatized by the experience, now suffers from anxiety and frequent flashbacks. She later reported the assaults to authorities.

On June 10, Judge Alex Menary sentenced Kudabo, stating that the victim had “placed her trust” in him—a trust he “abused”. The judge ruled that an immediate custodial sentence was the only appropriate punishment, with Kudabo to serve half of the 12-month term before being eligible for release.

Kudabo, a resident of Count De Burgh Terrace, South Bank, York, had no prior convictions and pleaded guilty on the first day of his trial in April. His lawyer, Jerry Sodipe, said Kudabo acted “inappropriately and unacceptably,” claiming he was moved by sympathy for the patient but “wrongly believed” a kiss would offer comfort.

Following the verdict, the York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust issued a public apology:

“We offer our sincere apologies to the patient affected. Patients should always feel safe and respected while in our care, and we deeply regret that this was not the case. The individual involved left our employment soon afterwards.”

Kudabo has since lost his job and faces further consequences as authorities and immigration officials review the case.
