The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) has officially launched the automation of its Excise Register System (ERS) as part of efforts to modernize trade processes and improve revenue generation.
According to the Service’s spokesperson, Abdullahi Maiwada, the ERS went live on Thursday following the successful completion of a pilot phase conducted between July and August 2025.
Key Pilot Locations
- The system was rolled out at three major excise facilities:
- British American Tobacco Nigeria (BATN) Plc in Oyo State
- International Tobacco Company (ITC) Limited in Kwara State
- Leaf Tobacco & Commodities Nigeria Ltd in Kaduna State
These factories were deliberately selected for their strategic importance to Nigeria’s excise sector and their ability to serve as a foundation for nationwide adoption.
Maiwada noted that the pilot phase achieved a 75% efficiency score during User Acceptance Testing (UAT) at BATN, successfully integrated production and reporting systems across factories, and strengthened collaboration between the NCS and industry stakeholders.
Features of the Automated Excise Register System
With the commencement of live operations, all excise-related transactions at the pilot sites will now be managed digitally, including:
- Recording production figures
- Computing excise duties
- Generating statutory reports

The automation is expected to reduce manual documentation, eliminate inconsistencies in data reporting, enhance transparency, and improve efficiency in excise administration.
Next Steps in Nationwide Rollout
The ERS forms a central part of the Nigeria Customs Service’s Trade Modernisation Project. In its next phases, the system will be extended to cover excise-regulated industries such as beverages, spirits, and other manufacturing sectors.
“The NCS calls on industry operators and stakeholders to embrace this reform and provide feedback as we expand the system nationwide. This will help build a more robust excise regime that enhances compliance, boosts efficiency, and secures sustainable revenue growth for the Federal Government,” the statement read.
