Troops of the Nigerian Army have intercepted 242 bags of NPK fertiliser suspected to be diverted for use in the production of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) by terrorists in Borno State.
A credible source at the Army Headquarters confirmed the operation to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Abuja, stressing that the interception reflects the military’s vigilance in blocking insurgents’ supply chains.
Fertiliser Diversion Uncovered
According to the source, troops of 151 Task Force Battalion at Banki Junction, Bama Local Government Area, stopped a truck carrying 142 bags of NPK 20-10-10 fertiliser on Wednesday.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the consignment was originally approved for delivery to Mbalala ward in Chibok LGA but was instead diverted through Bama en route Askira-Uba, raising suspicions of terrorist links.
In a related incident, troops of the 21 Military Intelligence Regiment, in collaboration with the 21 Provost Company, intercepted another truck at Banki carrying:
- 100 bags of NPK fertiliser
- 79 bags of maize
- 21 bags of rice
The fertiliser was not listed in the truck’s waybill, and the driver reportedly claimed he was unaware of the consignment and was only paid to deliver the goods in Banki town.
National Security Threat
The suspects and items have been taken into custody for further investigation. The source explained that fertiliser diversion remains a major national security threat, as insurgents use it to manufacture explosives for attacks.

The army has vowed to continue blocking critical logistics exploited by Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists, while urging transporters, traders, and locals to remain vigilant and avoid aiding criminal networks.
Counter-Insurgency Operations
In addition to the fertilizer seizures, troops discovered and safely detonated two IEDs planted along the Mafa–Ajiri road in Mafa LGA. Soldiers also repelled coordinated ISWAP/JAS attacks on military piquets in Bama on Thursday.
Three civilians were injured in the incident and evacuated to a hospital in Banki for treatment.
The source reaffirmed that the Nigerian Army, in synergy with other security agencies, will sustain counter-terrorism operations to protect citizens and deny terrorists access to resources.
