Former Super Eagles striker and football pundit Victor Ikpeba has shared his impressions of the national team’s preparations ahead of their World Cup qualifying clash with Rwanda.
Speaking during his punditry duties on SuperSport, Ikpeba disclosed that he was present at the Super Eagles’ training sessions and noted a positive atmosphere among the players. He praised head coach Eric Chelle’s tactical decisions, including his starting line-up for the Rwanda match at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
- “Before the game, I thought Ekong would start as the captain. We don’t know whether that’s technical or not. You know, sometimes as a manager, you have to manage this game,” Ikpeba explained. He added that resting senior players like William Troost-Ekong was not a problem, stressing that “it doesn’t matter who plays,” as long as the team remains united and focused.

Ikpeba further highlighted the difficulty of playing two matches within a short period, but expressed confidence in the squad’s ability to adapt. “Looking at the line-up, no more surprises, is my own opinion. Ekong will play his role as a captain behind the scenes to support the players. I spoke with him yesterday, and everybody knows what to do. The players, with what I saw in the training session in the last three days, are very positive,” he said.
At the time of his comments, the Super Eagles were leading Rwanda 1-0 in the crucial qualifier, showing early signs of translating their training-ground energy into performance on the pitch.
