Nigeria, US Agree on Security Cooperation Amid Rising Insecurity – Presidency.

The Nigerian government and the United States have reached an agreement on key areas of collaboration to address the worsening security situation in the country, the Presidency has confirmed.

According to a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the agreement includes the immediate implementation of a non-binding cooperation framework and the establishment of a Joint Working Group to ensure a coordinated and unified approach to the agreed areas of partnership.

Scope of Cooperation

The US expressed its readiness to provide complementary support, including:

  • Humanitarian assistance to affected populations in the Middle Belt.
  • Technical support to strengthen early-warning mechanisms.
  • Enhanced intelligence sharing.
  • Expedited processing of defence equipment requests.

Potential provision of excess defence articles (subject to availability) to reinforce ongoing counter-terrorism and anti-extremist operations.

The Nigerian government, in turn, reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening civilian protection measures and ensuring the security of vulnerable communities.

During the meetings, the Nigerian delegation refuted allegations of genocide, emphasizing that violent attacks in the country affect families and communities across religious and ethnic lines. The delegation stressed that misrepresenting the situation could divide Nigerians and distort realities on the ground.

Outcomes of the Engagement

Following the discussions, both countries agreed to:

  • Implement the non-binding cooperation framework immediately.
  • Establish a Joint Working Group for a unified and coordinated response.

Forge a solution-driven partnership that reinforces mutual trust and strengthens the protection of citizens, particularly in the Middle Belt.
