The Federal Government of Nigeria has initiated discussions with Switzerland regarding the return of stolen artefacts currently housed in Swiss museums, including ancient bronze works and monoliths.
The Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, held a meeting with the Swiss Ambassador, Patrick Egloff, in Abuja on Friday, where both sides explored cultural cooperation and heritage restitution.
Ambassador Egloff noted that the process of returning the artefacts began three years ago, expressing Switzerland’s commitment to strengthening ties with Nigeria. He added that the first batch of bronze pieces could be officially handed over through Nigeria’s Embassy before the end of the year.

In her response, Musawa appreciated the Swiss government’s efforts, stressing that recovering the artefacts is vital to Nigeria’s cultural heritage. She also revealed that the talks would extend beyond restitution to other areas of cooperation, such as animation, design, architecture, tourism, and hospitality.
She said:
- “It is very important for us, Nigeria, to have back these artefacts and also engage in a wider conversation with Switzerland about what the restitution will look like.”
Both countries agreed to continue the dialogue and deepen cultural partnerships in the coming months.
