Nigeria made a remarkable impression at the just-concluded First Abia Para-Badminton International Tournament, clinching three gold, four silver, and nine bronze medals to finish fourth overall at the historic event held in Umuahia.
Paralympic bronze medallist Eniola Bolaji led the charge, dominating Cameroon’s Danyele Mouafo 2-0 (21-7, 21-3) to claim gold in the women’s singles SL3 category.

In the men’s singles SL4, Africa’s top-ranked player Jeremiah Nnanna outclassed fellow Nigerian Yahaya Ayuba 2-0 (21-9, 21-8) to secure another gold for Team Nigeria.
Adding to the triumph, Mary Nathan staged a stunning comeback to defeat Brazil’s Juscileia Silva 2-1 (5-21, 21-18, 21-17) and win gold in the women’s singles WH1 event.
Nigeria also earned silver medals through Jeremiah Nnanna, Obinna Nwosu, Chinyere Okoro, Yahaya Ayuba, and Ijeoma Chukwuemeka.

Brazil emerged as the overall champion with seven gold, three silver, and five bronze medals, while India and Peru followed closely in second and third positions, respectively.
A total of 114 players from 13 countries competed across 19 events from September 30 to October 5, with the tournament officially closing in a colourful ceremony attended by Abia State Governor, Alex Otti.
