Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has once again voiced his criticism of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating that Nigeria does not deserve a leader with a tainted past.
Atiku, who contested the 2023 presidential election under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), made this known on Sunday, through his Media Aide, Paul Ibe, following a U.S. court ruling ordering the FBI and DEA to release records related to investigations involving Tinubu.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Ibe wrote:
- “Just about time, the records of Tinubu, including his forfeiture of funds for alleged drugs trafficking and certificate at Chicago State University, are made public.
- The Black nation’s most populous country does not deserve a leader with a tainted past.
- Whatever is being hidden inside must be unveiled. Nigerians and the rest of the world deserve to know. There must be full disclosure.”
NaijaBlogDaily earlier reported that Judge Beryl Howell of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia gave the order on Tuesday, April 8, 2025. The ruling was in response to a motion by Aaron Greenspan, founder of the transparency platform PlainSite, who alleged that U.S. agencies violated the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) by failing to release documents on time.
The documents in question involve federal investigations into Tinubu and Abiodun Agbele, including a $460,000 forfeiture made by Tinubu in 1993, which U.S. authorities had linked to suspected proceeds of narcotics trafficking.
Judge Howell ruled that protecting the records from public view is neither logical nor plausible and ordered the FBI and DEA to release all non-exempt materials.

- Responding, Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said the case contained nothing new.
“There is nothing new to be revealed. The report by Agent Moss of the FBI and the DEA has been in the public space for more than 30 years,” Onanuga stated via X.
“The reports did not indict the Nigerian leader. The lawyers are examining the ruling.”
As reactions continue to pour in, Atiku’s remarks reflect ongoing concerns in political and civic spaces about leadership integrity, transparency, and public accountability in Nigeria.
