As Nigeria marks its 65th Independence Anniversary, the apex Igbo socio-cultural body, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has called on citizens and leaders to use the milestone for sober reflection rather than mere celebration.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Ezechi Chukwu, and titled “Nigeria at 65: A Time for Reflection, Renewal and National Rebirth”, Ohanaeze stressed the importance of inclusive governance, justice, and equity across the country.

While reaffirming the group’s commitment to unity, peace, and development, Ohanaeze raised concerns over the destruction of Igbo-owned businesses and investments in Lagos and other regions under controversial circumstances. The organization described such actions as harmful to national growth and cohesion.

Quoting President-General Senator John Azuta Mbata, the group said:

  • “Independence at 65 should not just be about counting years but reflecting on the quality of life of our citizens. We remain dedicated to national unity and peace, but not at the expense of dignity or continued marginalization.”

Ohanaeze also renewed its demand for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, describing his detention as a test of Nigeria’s commitment to justice, equity, and reconciliation.

The group urged both federal and state governments to prioritize governance that ensures security, protects citizens’ welfare, and promotes inclusive political and economic participation. It warned that no nation can thrive when segments of its population are made to feel alienated or treated as second-class citizens.

Concluding its message, Ohanaeze emphasized the need for dialogue, mutual respect, and genuine federalism as the foundation for national progress. The body encouraged Nigerians to remain law-abiding while contributing positively to the nation’s development.

“This 65th Independence Anniversary must not be just a ritual celebration—it should mark the dawn of Nigeria’s renewal and rebirth,” the statement declared.
