Niger: Man Arrested for Exhuming Grandmother’s Skull for Money Rituals.

The Niger State Police Command has arrested a 31-year-old man, Ahmadu Jiya of Gbafu village, for allegedly exhuming the corpse of his maternal grandmother for money rituals.

The shocking incident, which has stunned residents of the area, involved four other suspects:

  • Mohammed Ndache, 70, of Nagya, Edati LGA
  • Abubakar Mohammed, 21, of the Duma area
  • Ali Mohammed, 20, of Tsyaduka, Gbako LGA
  • Mohammed Adamu, 25, of Edati LGA

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, the suspects were apprehended on July 19, 2025, at a hotel in Bida, where they were found in possession of a human skull, believed to be used for ritual purposes.

Skull Belonged to Grandmother

Further investigation revealed that the skull was taken from the grave of Jiya’s late grandmother, who died at the age of over 90. Jiya allegedly exhumed the remains with the hope of using the skull for a money-making ritual to pay off debts totaling over ₦2 million.

  • “He took the skull to a herbalist, but after hearing the ritual conditions, he backed out and hid the skull in his home,” said Abiodun.

Ritual Failed, Skull Sold

Two years later, Mohammed Adamu returned to Jiya with Abubakar Mohammed and convinced him to sell the skull for ₦100,000, with ₦40,000 paid upfront.

The duo then contacted Mohammed Ndache, who directed them to Ali Mohammed, a suspected ritualist and “money doubler.” Ali allegedly demanded ₦500,000 to perform the ritual.

When the promised wealth failed to materialize, the men demanded a refund and arranged to meet Ali at the hotel, where all were arrested by police operatives based on a tip-off.

Police Investigation Ongoing

The suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Minna for further interrogation and prosecution.

SP Abiodun assured the public that the Niger State Police Command remains committed to ridding the state of all forms of criminal activity, including ritual-related offenses.
