Troops of the 6 Division, Nigerian Army, have stepped up their campaign against crude oil theft and illegal refining in the Niger Delta region, destroying eight illicit refineries and seizing over 18,000 litres of stolen crude oil in a series of well-coordinated operations across Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa states.
The Acting Deputy Director, 6 Division Army Public Relations, Lt. Col. Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, noting that the operations were conducted in collaboration with other security agencies and led to the arrest of several suspects connected to the illegal trade.

According to him, troops uncovered and dismantled a newly constructed illegal refining site at Joinkrama 4, Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State, where over 3,500 litres of stolen crude oil were recovered. Equipment such as receivers, ovens, and connecting pipes used in the refining process was also destroyed.
- “Additionally, acting on credible intelligence, troops intercepted a red Mercedes-Benz vacuum truck with registration number AHD 925 XA loaded with more than 3,200 litres of stolen crude along Aba Road in Oyigbo Local Government Area. The driver fled upon sighting the troops,” Danjuma stated.
He added that clearance operations around the Imo River axis also resulted in the discovery of another illegal refining camp. At the site, troops recovered drum pots, receivers, and over 2,000 litres of crude oil stored in sacks. More raids were conducted in Odogwa (Etche LGA), Obeama Uzomiri Waterside (Oyigbo LGA), and the Obiafor Oil Field in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni LGA, all in Rivers State.
In Akwa Ibom State, two Toyota Camry vehicles with registration numbers ANA 495 CK and AKD 233 EQ were intercepted at Ikot Okoro in Abak LGA, carrying 120 nylon bags containing over 3,600 litres of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO). Two suspects were taken into custody.

He further warned oil thieves and vandals to desist from criminal activities and embrace legitimate ventures, reaffirming the Army’s commitment to ensuring “the forests remain green and the waters blue” through sustained operations against oil theft and illegal refining in the Niger Delta.
