Nepal’s former chief justice, Sushila Karki, has been appointed as the country’s new prime minister to lead a transition government following violent anti-corruption protests that forced the resignation of former leader KP Sharma Oli.
The 73-year-old, who made history as Nepal’s first woman chief justice, will be sworn into office on Friday evening, according to a statement from the president’s office.

Nepal, a Himalayan nation of 30 million people, was thrown into turmoil this week after security forces clamped down on youth-led demonstrations, leaving at least 51 people dead — the worst violence since the 2008 abolition of the monarchy and the end of the civil war.
Presidential press adviser Kiran Pokharel confirmed that President Ram Chandra Paudel will formally appoint Karki, with the swearing-in scheduled for 9:00 p.m. (1515 GMT). A council of ministers will be formed afterward to oversee the transitional process.
The unrest erupted amid worsening economic conditions, with one in five young people unemployed and the country’s GDP per capita standing at just $1,447, according to World Bank data.

Despite the heavy military presence enforcing a curfew, youth protesters under the umbrella movement known as “Gen Z” celebrated Karki’s appointment as a victory.
“It is a moment of victory… finally the power vacuum has ended,” said activist Amrita Ban, while fellow protester Nimesh Shrestha told AFP that demonstrators fully supported the choice of the former judge to steer Nepal through the crisis.
