The National Examinations Council (NECO) has reaffirmed that Kano State emerged as the overall best-performing state in the 2025 Council Examinations, contrary to reports suggesting Abia State topped the rankings.
According to NECO, Kano recorded 5.886 per cent and 39,351 candidates who achieved five credits and above, including Mathematics and English.

A recent newspaper report had claimed that Abia was the top state, citing its state code number 001 as justification. NECO, however, dismissed the publication as misleading and inaccurate, clarifying that the figures quoted were only an analysis of performance by state, not the official national ranking.
An official of the Council, who spoke on condition of anonymity, explained:
- “On the final performance ranking, Kano with its 015 code still comes first, while Abia State with 001 is placed 35th nationwide.”

Performance breakdowns also showed Lagos excelling in the male performance category, with 30,203 candidates achieving five credits and above in English and Mathematics, while Kano led the female ranking with 136,762 participants and a 5.020 per cent success rate.
The official cautioned the media against misleading educational reports, stressing the sensitivity of such national data.
Meanwhile, the Director of the Kano Educational Resource Centre (KERD), Hajiya Rabi Inuwa, revealed that Governor Yusuf had paid over ₦3 billion in examination fees before the exams commenced. She, however, appealed to the governor to settle outstanding fees of about ₦475 million dating back to 2022.
