Nationwide Blackout Looms as Electricity Workers Begin Strike.

September 25, 2025-Published by Cyril

Nigeria is on the verge of a nationwide blackout as members of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) commenced an indefinite strike on Wednesday, citing poor welfare conditions and non-implementation of the national minimum wage.

The decision to down tools was confirmed in a strike notice signed by the Acting General Secretary of NUEE, Dominic Igwebike, who explained that the action followed the expiration of the union’s ultimatum to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

According to the notice, electricity workers are demanding:

  1. Full implementation of the National Minimum Wage.
  2. End to casualisation of workers.
  3. Provision of working tools and materials.
  4. Payment of outstanding staff salaries since April 2025.
  5. Availability of operational vehicles.
  6. Supply of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) since 2021.
  7. Resolution of issues arising from the unbundling of TCN.
  8. Settlement of unpaid retirement benefits.

NUEE said it could no longer stand by while the Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) deteriorates due to poor management.

  • “We cannot continue to fold our arms while we watch our rights being vehemently violated and the NESI going down the drain. To this end, the Union is compelled to withdraw its services,” the statement read.

The union further directed all members to comply with the strike directive until management addresses the issues.

This latest action comes just over a year after NUEE’s strike in June 2024, which disrupted power supply nationwide. At press time, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, had yet to respond to enquiries.

The ongoing strike is already raising concerns of a looming total blackout across the country if the impasse is not urgently resolved.
