The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has destroyed several clusters of illegal crude oil refining sites hidden within the creeks of Etche Local Government Area, Rivers State.
According to Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Director of Public Relations and Information, the operation was carried out on October 7, 2025, as part of NAF’s ongoing counter–oil theft missions in the Niger Delta.
Ejodame said the precise and intelligence-driven airstrikes were targeted at active refining camps discovered near Owaza, concealed in a heavily forested area. Credible surveillance confirmed no human activity before the strikes.
- “The aircrew engaged the targets with precision, destroying the illegal refining clusters and halting illicit activities,” he said.

Following the operation, a group alleged that the strike affected a local gin distillery in Umuebele, but no casualties were reported. Ejodame said the NAF had launched an investigation under its Civilian Harm Mitigation and Response Action Plan (CHMR-AP) to verify the claims.
Reaffirming NAF’s commitment to professionalism, Ejodame stressed that all operations are guided by international best practices, prioritizing civilian safety and transparency.
He added that the Nigerian Air Force remains dedicated to protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity and supporting other security agencies in combating criminal networks.
