The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) have suffered fresh political setbacks as two federal lawmakers officially defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) during Wednesday’s plenary session.
Hon. Okolie Lawrence, representing the Aniocha North/Aniocha South/Oshimili North/Oshimili South federal constituency of Delta State, resigned from the Labour Party. He explained that his move to the APC was aimed at “bringing governance closer” to the grassroots and ensuring better representation for his constituents.

Similarly, Hon. Akingbaso Olanrewaju, who represents the Idanre/Ifedore federal constituency in Ondo State, dumped the PDP due to what he described as an unresolved internal crisis within the party. He declared his support for the “Renewed Hope” agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and aligned with the APC’s political ideology.
The defection of Olanrewaju triggered a protest on the House floor by Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda, who challenged the legality of the move, insisting that there was no crisis within the PDP to justify such action. Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, however, acknowledged the protest but allowed proceedings to continue.
