Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has ordered the immediate suspension of all illegal vigilante groups operating in the state following the gruesome killing of travelers in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area.
In addition, the governor suspended the Commander of the Edo State Security Corps, CP Friday Ibadin (Rtd.), as part of efforts to restore law and order.
Illegal Vigilantes Blamed for Uromi Killings
- According to a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, the decision follows a review of the preliminary report on the tragic incident that occurred on March 27. The statement clarified that the vigilante group involved in the killings was not registered or recognized by the Edo State Security Corps.
- “Its actions do not reflect the core values, character, and principles of the Okpebholo administration or the objectives of the corps as enshrined in the Edo State Security Corps Governance Law,” the statement noted.
Ongoing Investigations & Arrests
So far, 14 suspects have been arrested in connection with the killings, while security agencies, including a special team set up by the Inspector General of Police, continue their manhunt for other perpetrators.
President Bola Tinubu has also ordered security agencies to fish out those responsible and bring them to justice.

Government Reassures Citizens
The Edo State Government reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the constitutional rights of all citizens to move freely and conduct business lawfully. Authorities are also in contact with the families of the victims, community leaders, and the Kano State Government, as most of the deceased were reportedly from Kano.
“We urge all parties involved to remain calm as the state government ensures justice is served efficiently, transparently, and proactively,” the statement concluded.
