As President Bola Ahmed Tinubu enters the second year of his administration, the African Centre for Energy Governance and Accountability (ACEGA) has called for stronger action on energy infrastructure investment, decarbonisation policy, and oil and gas sector reforms.
ACEGA’s Executive Director, Dr. Usman Bello Idris, praised Tinubu’s political will and reformist drive in the sector but urged the administration to push further, especially in areas tied to Nigeria’s energy transition.
Tinubu Commended for Reviving Investor Confidence
Dr. Idris acknowledged the positive strides already made under Tinubu, citing the implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) and improved oil production figures.
“For years, Nigeria’s oil and gas sector groaned under inefficiency, uncertainty, and dwindling output. But what we are seeing today is a bold reset — one that respects the sanctity of the PIA while pushing for real, measurable growth,” he said.
Nigeria’s crude oil output, which had plunged below 1.2 million barrels per day (bpd) in 2022, has now climbed to 1.7 million bpd, thanks to what ACEGA called “deliberate interventions and strategic leadership.”
Key Reforms Driving the Turnaround
According to ACEGA, the Tinubu administration has:
- Relaunched dormant oil assets
- Strengthened pipeline security and metering systems
- Empowered the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC)
- Actively implemented key aspects of the PIA, including:
- Host Communities Development Trust
- New fiscal incentives for marginal fields
- Clearer environmental compliance standards
- Dr. Idris emphasized that these steps are restoring operator confidence, curbing oil theft, and delivering transparency to investors.
“The PIA under this administration is not just a document — it is a living, working tool of reform,” he added.
Call for Strategic Decarbonisation Plan
Despite progress, ACEGA stressed the urgent need for a national decarbonisation policy that aligns with global climate goals.
“Nigeria’s energy future must be cleaner, more transparent, and more rewarding for all stakeholders,” Dr. Idris said.

He urged Tinubu to balance fossil fuel development with renewable energy expansion, tackle gas monetisation challenges, and expand energy access for underserved communities.
Conclusion: Consolidate Reforms, Expand Vision
While Tinubu’s administration has laid a solid foundation in its first two years, ACEGA believes the next phase must focus on climate-conscious growth, sustainable infrastructure, and inclusive energy access to ensure Nigeria’s energy sector thrives in a decarbonizing world.
