Meet Cardinal Peter Turkson: Ghanaian Prelate Tipped to Become the First Black Pope.

As the Catholic Church mourns the passing of Pope Francis, attention has turned to who will become the next spiritual leader of over 1.3 billion Catholics worldwide. Among the prominent contenders is Cardinal Peter Turkson, a Ghanaian cleric who could make history as the first Black Pope.

Who Is Peter Turkson?

Born in Western Ghana into a family of ten children, Cardinal Turkson began his seminary training both in Ghana and in New York, before pursuing advanced biblical studies at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome, where he earned a licentiate and doctorate in Scripture.

He was ordained a priest in 1975, and by 1992, Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Cape Coast. In 2003, Turkson was elevated to the College of Cardinals, making him one of the highest-ranking African figures in the Church.

A Global Voice with Deep Roots

Cardinal Turkson is fluent in German, French, Italian, and English, and is widely respected for his intellectual rigor and international perspective. He has long championed social justice, peace, and environmental issues, frequently advocating for the poor and marginalized.

In 2009, Pope Benedict XVI invited him to lead the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, and in 2016, Pope Francis appointed him as the first prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development.

As of April 2022, Turkson now serves as Chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, a prestigious role that keeps him at the heart of Vatican thought leadership.

A Bridge Between Cultures

Turkson’s moderate stance has made him a bridge between conservative and progressive factions in the Church. Though he maintains a traditional view on Catholic doctrine, he has spoken out against extreme anti-LGBTQ+ policies in Africa and emphasized cultural respect and compassion.

His progressive views have sometimes put him at odds with more orthodox bishops in Ghana, but they have also elevated his status among more liberal and inclusive voices in the global Church.

Rising African Influence

As the Catholic population in Africa continues to grow, many believe the time is ripe for a pope from the continent. According to Deccan Herald, the idea of an African pope is becoming increasingly popular.

Turkson’s long-standing experience, combined with his theological insight and diplomatic engagements—including serving as a peace envoy to South Sudan—positions him as one of the most eminent papabili (potential popes) in this historic moment.

A Turning Point for the Church

With the Church now entering a period of sede vacante (vacant seat), the upcoming conclave will determine its next leader. Cardinal Peter Turkson stands at the center of this crucial decision, representing hope for a more diverse, inclusive, and globally aware papacy.
