In a major political development, all Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) House of Representatives members from Delta State have officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The defection was formally announced by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, during Tuesday’s plenary session, signaled a deeper shift in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

This mass defection follows the surprise move by former Delta State governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, and the incumbent Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, who both dumped the PDP for the APC during a high-level stakeholders’ meeting held in Asaba, the Delta State capital.
The wave of defections from the PDP to the ruling APC is raising concerns about the future of opposition politics in Nigeria. Political observers say this could significantly alter the political alignment in the South-South region, a long-time stronghold of the PDP.
Adding to the momentum, Ikenga Ugochinyere, PDP House member representing Ideato Federal Constituency in Imo State, recently disclosed that two more PDP governors and over 40 lawmakers are set to join the APC in the coming weeks.

Despite the defections, former Senate President Bukola Saraki has expressed optimism, insisting that the PDP remains strong and will soon be repositioned for national relevance. “Those who want to defect are free to leave,” Saraki said, “but the party will bounce back stronger.”
The APC continues to consolidate its hold on power with increasing defections from opposition ranks, fueling speculations of a political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
