Maryam Abacha, widow of Nigeria’s former military Head of State, General Sani Abacha, has spoken out against long-standing accusations of corruption and looting against her late husband. In a recent interview with TVC, Mrs. Abacha firmly denied claims that her husband embezzled billions of dollars from Nigeria’s treasury, stating there is no credible evidence to support such allegations.
The former First Lady questioned the legitimacy of the claims, saying:
“Who is the witness of the monies that were being stashed? Did you see the signature or the evidence of any monies stashed abroad?”
Maryam Abacha further alleged that the funds her husband had secured for Nigeria’s development mysteriously disappeared after his death in 1998.

“And the monies that my husband kept for Nigeria, in a few months, the monies vanished. People are not talking about that,” she said.
She criticized the continued focus on her husband’s legacy nearly 27 years after his passing, suggesting that tribalism and religious bias may be fueling the attacks on his reputation.
“Why are you blaming somebody? Is that tribalism or a religious problem? Why are Nigerians so bad towards each other? Because someone is a northerner or a southerner, a Muslim or a Christian? It’s not fair.”
Mrs. Abacha also took aim at the Nigerian media, urging journalists to be more constructive in their coverage of historical political figures.
“Twenty-seven years ago, and you’re still talking about Abacha. He must be very powerful and loved by Nigerians. We thank God for that.”

Highlighting Nigeria’s relatively stable economy under Abacha’s regime, characterized by increased foreign reserves and lower external debt, Maryam Abacha insisted her husband did not steal from the country.
- “So, where did he steal the money from? Nigerians believe everything they hear.”
- She ended her remarks by calling for national unity and mutual respect among Nigerians:
“Abacha doesn’t make Nigeria alone. Babangida doesn’t make Nigeria alone. Even the ordinary man on the street is important. Let this wahala stop. We are all human beings.”
